  1. Dear HooknFly: my wife and I stay 10 days in August each summer with John/Bobbie Martin (@ jct of Mineral and Cebolla creeks) since 1996. Prior to that we stayed at Youmans’ Powderhorn Cabins. We are avid fly fishers, not as good as you I am sure. I began my BLM career in the Gunnison area in 1974 and it got into my blood…retired now. We are interested in your info on Pauline, Perfecto, Cochetopa creeks. We fish Pinos and Pauline creeks but just near the roads that travel by. Getting into my 70s makes me a little shy to adventure to new roads, or get caught in a summer shower and have to sit for a while. I guess I need to get a USFS road #s map so I can better figure out your directions.

    1. Hi Richard. Roads to all the creeks you mentioned are usually fine especially Cochetopa. Give Chavez Creek a try above its confluence with Perfecto. Only a short 20 minute hike from the corral as mentioned in my blog on Chavez Creek. Feel free to give me a call to discuss directions. 303-881-6066. Chris Duerksen

  2. Hi Chris,

I have enjoyed looking through your blogs and pictures. Very nice indeed!

I am trying to plan a trip to Colorado to fish for Greenback and Rio Grande cutts. I am coming from Norther Utah. Do you have a suggestion where these two species can be found close to each other. I am open to river or lake fishing. I’m just trying to minimize that amount of driving to maximize the amount of fishing.

    Thanks!!

    1. Thx for the compliment Kurt. Glad you enjoyed the articles. Finding Greenbacks and Rio Grand Cutts close together will take some doing. The San Luis Valley in southern Colorado has several streams where Rio Grands Cutts are abundant but the Greenbacks are only in the Arkansas and South Platte drainages, quite a distance and over the Continental Divide away. Several of my articles deal with good Cutt streams in a San Luis Valley. I suggest you call Ark Anglers in Salida, CO, and ask them about good bets for Greenbacks.

      1. Hey, great article! My buddy and I were fishing Grape Creek and pulled out some nice browns and cutbows (I am happy to forward you pictures of them). I found that our access was wildly limited and was hoping you could point us in the right direction of the other four access points. Specifically, we really want to get into the canyon! It would be great if you could email me back at sammullen77@outlook.com. Thanks again!

      2. Hi Sam. Glad you enjoyed the article. Public to Grape Creek is indeed limited —a short stretch just below Deweese Reservoir, Bear Gulch northeast of Westcliffe, and two on lower Grape Creek just west of Cañon City. I did articles on all except Deweese. Where were you fishing? Hope this helps. Chris

  3. We were fishing just below the reservoir. Surprisingly some really nice fish in there. We caught mostly on pheasant tails, but they were rising for something, we just could not figure out what. We also saw bear gulch on the map, but could not find the road or trail to access it. Which access would you recommend?
